Copywriting: 10 psychological techniques to persuade (and sell)

Your words are levers. Do you know how to pull them?

You can have the most beautiful design in the world, the most innovative product, the most incredible offer… If your words are weak, nobody will click. Nobody will buy. Nobody will trust you.

Copywriting, the art of writing to persuade, isn’t about pretty sentences. It’s about psychology. It means understanding how the human brain makes decisions, and using that knowledge to guide your reader towards the action you want them to take.

Careful, this isn’t about manipulation. It’s about connection. Building trust, removing obstacles and making your solution irresistibly obvious.

At BLACKT, we see copywriting as the invisible half of design. It’s the soul of your website. Here are 10 psychological techniques we use to give your words more power.

Copywriting is the oil that keeps your customer moving smoothly through the conversion funnel.

1. Social proof: the herd effect (but for a good cause)

The principle: we are social creatures. We tend to trust what other people do and say.

How to use it:

  • Customer testimonials: with a name, a photo and specific details.
  • Client or partner logos: “They trust us”.
  • Numbers: “10,000+ happy customers”, “Rated 4.9/5 on…”
  • Press mentions.

2. Reciprocity: give to receive

The principle: when someone gives us something, we naturally feel we owe them.

How to use it:

  • High-value free content: an e-book, a template, a guide (like this one!).
  • A free audit.
  • A free 15-minute consultation.

Give value before asking for anything in return.

3. Urgency and scarcity: the fear of missing out (FOMO)

The principle: we place more value on what is rare or available for a limited time.

How to use it (ethically!):

  • Limited-time offer: “20% off until midnight tonight”.
  • Limited stock: “Only 3 left in stock”.
  • Limited places: “Only 10 places for this workshop”.

Don’t invent fake urgency. Use it when it’s real.

4. Anchoring: the power of the first number

The principle: the first number we see becomes the reference point for all the others.

How to use it:

  • Show the original price crossed out: “€199 €99″. The €99 looks far more attractive.
  • Present the most expensive offer first: the other offers will look more affordable by comparison.

5. The framing effect: how you say it matters as much as what you say

The principle: the way information is presented radically changes how we perceive it.

How to use it:

  • “90% success rate” is more powerful than “10% failure rate”.
  • “An investment of €50 a month” works better than “A cost of €600 a year”.
  • Focus on benefits (what the customer gains) rather than features (what the product does).
Word choice is not a detail. It is the very essence of persuasion.

6. Commitment and consistency: the first yes

The principle: once we’ve made a small decision, we tend to stick to it and to make bigger decisions that are consistent with the first one.

How to use it:

  • Start with a small request: “Sign up to our newsletter”.
  • Ask questions the reader will answer “yes” to: “Do you want more clients?”, “Fed up with the technical side?”.
  • Use multi-step forms.

7. Authority: trust in the expert

The principle: we naturally trust authority figures and experts.

How to use it:

  • Highlight your certifications, your qualifications, your years of experience.
  • Publish detailed case studies.
  • Write in-depth articles (like this one!) that demonstrate your expertise.
  • Use technical jargon… then explain it simply. It shows you’ve mastered your subject.

8. Liking: we buy from people we like

The principle: we are more inclined to say yes to people we like.

How to use it:

  • Show your team, your faces.
  • Tell your story, your failures, your successes (storytelling).
  • Use a human tone of voice, with humour if it fits your brand personality.
  • Find common ground with your audience.

9. Visualisation: painting the future

The principle: the brain struggles to tell the difference between a real experience and one that is vividly imagined.

How to use it:

  • Use the future tense: “Imagine, six months from now, when you’ve…”
  • Describe things through the 5 senses: “You’ll feel the relief of…”, “You’ll see your sales…”
  • Paint a clear picture of “heaven” (life with your product) and “hell” (life without it).

10. Justification: the power of “because”

The principle: a request that comes with a reason, even a simple one, is much more likely to be accepted.

How to use it:

  • Don’t just say “50% off”.
  • Say “50% off because we’re celebrating our 5th birthday and we want to thank you”.
  • Justify your price: “It costs this much because we use the best materials and every piece is handmade”.

FAQ: copywriting & psychology

Q1: isn’t this manipulation?
The line is a fine one. The difference lies in the intention. If you use these techniques to sell a mediocre product or to mislead the customer, that’s manipulation. If you use them to showcase an excellent product that will genuinely help your customer, that’s ethical persuasion.

Q2: which technique is the most powerful?
Social proof. It’s the most instinctive. Testimonials, reviews and case studies are your best persuasion tools.

Q3: how can I learn to write better?
Read a lot. Analyse the sales copy you admire. And above all, practise. Write every day. Test different approaches (A/B testing) on your pages and emails to see what works best.

Q4: do you have to be a psychologist to be a good copywriter?
No, but you do need to be a good observer of human nature. Empathy is the number one skill. You need to understand your customer’s fears, desires, frustrations and dreams better than they understand them themselves.

Q5: how does BLACKT build copywriting into its projects?
At BLACKT, copywriting isn’t an extra layer. It’s at the heart of the design strategy. The designer and the copywriter work hand in hand from the start, so that message and visuals reinforce each other. It’s the only way to create experiences that really hit home.

The last word: yours

Copywriting isn’t an obscure art reserved for a chosen few. It’s a skill you can learn, based on universal human principles. By using these techniques, you won’t just sell more. You’ll build a deeper, more authentic connection with your audience.

And that’s the secret of a brand that lasts.
