A brand platform is the reference document that sets out what a brand is, what it says and how it says it: mission, vision, values, positioning, promise, tone. It aligns everyone who speaks on the company’s behalf, from the leadership team to the agency, and makes every piece of communication consistent.
At BLACKT, no visual identity and no website gets started without one. Here is what it contains, how to build it, and the traps that turn it into a dead document.
What is a brand platform for?
To decide once and for all, rather than at every campaign. Without a platform, every new piece of communication reopens the same debates: which tone, which promise, which word to describe yourself. With one, the company gains three concrete things:
- Consistency: the website, social media, quotes and job ads all tell the story of the same brand.
- Speed: briefing an agency or onboarding a supplier takes one meeting, not six.
- Difference: a positioning written down in black and white forces you to choose who you exist against.
What does a brand platform contain?
The format varies from agency to agency, but the foundation is stable. A useful platform fits into about ten pages and answers seven questions:
| Element | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| Mission | Why the company exists, beyond selling |
| Vision | The world it wants to see in 10 years |
| Values | The 3 to 5 principles that settle difficult decisions |
| Positioning | For whom, against what, instead of what |
| Promise | What the client gets, put from their point of view |
| Proof | What makes the promise credible: figures, method, references |
| Tone of voice | How the brand speaks, and how it never speaks |
The test of a good platform: two people who do not know each other should be able to write two web pages that seem to come from the same hand.
How to build your brand platform: the 5-step method
- 1. Listen before you write. Interviews with the founders, the teams and above all the clients: what clients say about you is worth more than what you think you project.
- 2. Map the competition. List the promises and tones used in your sector to spot what everyone says, and therefore what you need to stop saying.
- 3. Settle the positioning. One sentence: for [target], [brand] is the [category] that [difference], because [proof]. Until it fits into one sentence, it has not been settled.
- 4. Write, then trim. A complete first draft, then cut everything that could appear on a competitor’s site. What remains is the brand.
- 5. Put it to the test. Rewrite one web page and one post using the platform. If the texts do not change, the platform says nothing.
A recent example. Au Niveau started with a simple question: what is a web agency worth when it works for one trade only? We chose construction, set a single core value with the Headvalue method, pride, then built the brand and the site around it: a fixed, published price, real job-site photos, no jargon. It is live, and you can judge it for yourself: Au Niveau, the web agency for the building trades.
The 3 traps that kill a brand platform
- Consensus. A platform voted on by everyone bothers no one, and so sets nothing apart. Someone has to make the call.
- Jargon. “Innovative customer-centric player” describes no real company. If your baker does not understand the sentence, rewrite it.
- The drawer. A platform that is not used to brief, recruit and make decisions dies within three months. It should be the first document sent to every new partner.
FAQ
What is the difference between a brand platform and brand guidelines?
The brand platform sets the substance: positioning, promise, tone. The brand guidelines set the form: logo, colours, typefaces. The guidelines translate the platform into visual signs, never the other way round.
How long does it take to create a brand platform?
Between 3 and 6 weeks in most cases: interviews, competitor analysis, writing and rounds of feedback. The timeline depends mainly on how available the leadership team is to make decisions.
Does a small business need a brand platform?
Yes, perhaps even more than a large one: when a single person handles all the communication, the platform stops the brand changing mood with every post. A condensed 4 to 5-page version is enough.
